Some Multi-function electric ovens may even offer features such as a defrost setting, pizza cook function or fanned grilling function.
What is a Fan Assisted Oven?
Modern fan ovens provide a means of blowing the air round in the oven box so as to even out the temperature gradient, which means food can be cooked evenly when placed anywhere in the oven.
This mode (fan assisted) of oven cooking would be non-conventional and allows one to cook with the oven temperature turned down by 20 or so degrees Celsius.
Many ovens allow you to turn the fan on or off so that the oven can be made to function in the conventional manner if needed.
What is a Conventional Oven ?
What is a Conventional Oven?
Convection ovens or fan ovens or turbo ovens augment a traditional oven by circulating heated air using a fan.
The fan motor is in a separate enclosure, to protect it from overheating and melting any plastic components including wire insulation.
Food warms faster in a convection oven, because the moving air strips away the thin layer of air which otherwise would surround and insulate the food.
What is an Electric Induction Hob Cooking?
What is an Induction Hot Plate? An induction hob works on electric magnetic heat transfer rather than electric radiant heat transfer. Induction will normally have a heavier draw on electrical power supply but is much quicker than standard ceramic electric hobs
What is a Ceramic Hot Plate ?
What is a Ceramic Hot Plate?
The ceramic hotplate is a glass ceramic plate which includes heating elements, which are separated by an insulating layer, for direct heating.
The cooking area is sub-divided into at least one inner and one outer area which include individual heating elements for each partial area.
These heating elements can be switched or adjusted with regard to the output which regulates the heat of the individual element.

What are Freestanding Cookers ?Gas Cooker or Electric Cooker?
What are Freestanding Gas & Electric Cookers?
What is a Freestanding Gas Cooker ?
What is a Freestanding Electric Cooker ?
What is a Freestanding Dual Fuel Cooker ?
Freestanding cookers come in the following fuel options:
What is a Freestanding Gas Cooker ?
A freestanding gas cooker is an appliance or range varying in sizes of 50cm, 55cm or 60cm wide with gas rings on a top hob and
an oven under the hob for cooking food with gas.
The gas rings on top are gas burners consisting of a circular metal pipe with several small holes through which gas can escape to
be burned, hence creating the flame which in turn cooks your food or boils liquid.
The gas that is used in these cookers can be either "natural gas" or "LPG bottled gas". Most appliances are set up to use natural
gas, but can be converted with a conversion kit so they can use LPG.
In all of the fore mentioned models, there are various sizes on offer in relation to the width of the appliance and these are
50cm (19.5"), 55cm (21") or 60cm (23.5"). Most of these cookers have a standard height size of 90cm (35.5) and a depth size
of 60cm (23.5) although there are a few exceptions to these dimensions that are also available to purchase in
The Gas Company or online at www.thegascompany.ie in some models of freestanding cookers.
There are also many options that you can have in the design of your cooker, with regard to where you
want the grill positioned and how many ovens you would like on the appliance. Some of these options would be as follows:
Gas Double Oven Freestanding Cooker (available in Gas, Electric or Duel Fuel only)
Gas Twin Cavity Single Oven & Grill (available in Gas, Electric or Duel Fuel only)
Gas Single Cavity Single Oven & Grill (available in Gas, Electric or Duel Fuel only)
Gas Eye-Level Grill with Single Oven (available in Gas or Gas using LPG Bottled Gas only)
What are Freestanding Electric Cookers ?
A freestanding electric cooker is an appliance that uses electric as its fuel type to cook or heat food. The cooker consists
of a hob on top containing 4 rings and an oven and grill in one compartment or seperate compartments underneath the hob.
The most common methods used on hobs include, among others, coil elements (the most common and familiar kind of
"electric" cooker), halogen heaters, and induction.
The newest of these methods is "induction" this is a powerful, high-frequency electromagnet, with the electromagnetism generated
by sophisticated electronics in the "element" under the unit's ceramic surface. When a good-sized piece of magnetic material--
such as, for example, a cast-iron skillet--is placed in the magnetic field that the element is generating, the field transfers ("induces")
energy into that metal. That transferred energy causes the metal--the cooking vessel--to become hot.
By controlling the strength of the electromagnetic field, we can control the amount of heat being generated in the cooking vessel.
Another method of electric hob cooking is "Halogen Cooktops" these use hugely powerful lamps similar to normal incandescent
light bulbs only hotter and brighter. When electricity flows through the filament, the lamp gives off light and gets hot.
There are various sizes on offer in relation to the width of electric cookers and these are
50cm (19.5"), 55cm (21") or 60cm (23.5"). Most of these cookers have a standard height size of 90cm (35.5") and a depth size
of 60cm (23.5") although there are a few exceptions to these dimensions that are also available to purchase in
The Gas Company or online at www.thegascompany.ie in some models of freestanding cookers.
What are Freestanding Duel Fuel Cookers ?
Duel fuel freestanding cookers, much like gas & electric cookers have various sizes on offer in relation to the width
of electric cookers and these are 50cm (19.5"), 55cm (21") or 60cm (23.5"). Most of these cookers have a standard
height size of 90cm (35.5") and a depth size of 60cm (23.5") although there are a few exceptions to these
dimensions that are also available to purchase in The Gas Company or online at www.thegascompany.ie.
Dual fuel cookers offer the responsive cooking capacity of a gas hob alongside the even heating of an electric oven .
Dual fuel generally refers to a gas hob and electric oven because this set-up offers the most convenient and most
preferred method of cooking for many families. To install this sort of model in your house you will obviously need
access to electricity and a gas supply (mains or LPG).
On some models the two cavities consist of a grill and an oven, on others the grill also doubles as a second oven.
Usually the main oven is the bottom cavity and it often offers fan cooking capabilities.
The second oven is the upper cavity and while this can also be a fan oven, more often than not it is a conventional oven.
Bear this is mind as you use the appliance as conventional ovens don't heat as evenly as fan ovens and you
may need to preheat the appliance before you commence.
In terms of the gas element, a dual fuel cooker can be a great benefit. Top chefs sing the praises of cooking on
a gas hob because of the speed with which they respond to change in comparison to an electric hob.
If you turn down the flow of gas, the flame becomes smaller and so heat is immediately reduced.
What is Carbon Monoxide?
Carbon Monoxide is a silent killer!Carbon Monoxide cannot be smelled, heard of seen !
Homeowners rarely forget to alert their home to the presence of smoke or fire by use of a Smoke Detector/Alarm - but as Carbon Monoxide is a highly dangerous gas - it is just as important - if not more important to protect you home from this silent killer CARBON MONOXIDE.
Installation of a Carbon Monoxide detector has become even more important , in recent years, in homes due to increased use of solid fuel, gas and other home heating appliances in the average household and the increase in home renovations and newbuilds.
What are the common Causes of CO Poisoning?
Dangerous amounts of Carbon Monoxide can accumulate in the home for a number of reasons. Carbon Monoxide can occur as a result of any of the following:
- Always enure your home appliances are installed or serviced by a properly qualified /accredited and registered installer.
- Ventilation of a room is very important when using certain gas or solid fuel fires /appliances. Ventilation should also be considered when carrying out home improovements with your builder.
- Carbon Monoxide can also occur when a cooking appliance is used for heating purposes.
- Combustion Engines such as cars, vans etc...(even lawmowers) can create Carbon Monoxide.
- Heating appliances -which are Faulty or damaged,or if they have been poorly installed, serviced - or not serviced at all!
Symptoms of CO Poisoning
Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning can be similar to those caused by other illnesses such as a cold or flu. They include
- Unexplained headaches, chest pains or muscular weakness,Sickness, diarrhoea or stomach pains,Sudden dizziness when standing up,General lethargy
What should I Do if I suspect any issue of Carbon Monoxide?
If there is anyone in your house with the symptoms - get out immediately to get fresh air, seek medical advice and ask you medical advisor to check for Carbon Monoxide poisoning.
Stop using the suspected appliances immediately and do not use it again until it has been checked by a registered installer or a qualified service agent.
What is the difference between PROPANE gas VS. BUTANE gas?
Whats the difference between PROPANE gas VS. BUTANE gas?
LPG, or Liquefied Petroleum Gas, is the term widely used to describe a family of light hydrocarbons. The two most prominent members of this family are propane and butane.
Both types of gases are used for industrial and household purposes and have similar qualities that is why people often confuse them. There are certain differences between butane and propane which could either be advantageous or disadvantageous depending on how they are being used.
SIMILARITIES
Both are extracted from petroleum in oil or natural gas form. When combusted, they produce carbon dioxide, water, carbon monoxide and soot. Both are used to fuel vehicles and for heating stoves.
DIFFERENCES
Propane has a lower boiling point than butane so it will continue to convert from a liquid to a gas even in very cold conditions, down to -45ºC. When stored as a liquid in a tank, it exerts a greater pressure than Butane at the same temperature. So Propane, as an LPG, is most suitable for exterior storage and use. Its ability to operate in low temperatures makes it the most suitable LPG for many applications. Propane is widely used as a fuel source for domestic and commercial heating, hot water and cooking. It also has a wide range of uses in industry and agriculture. When the fuel needs to be stored for a long time, propane is a better choice than butane. When people need to go camping, hiking or mountain climbing, especially in cold weather, propane is preferred over butane as a fuel for cooking.
Butane has the lower vapor pressure at equivalent temperatures and is suitable for interior use or outside during the summer. Butane is a very common fuel among leisure users and owners of portable heaters and is known to be cheaper than Propane.
Propane and butane are normally stored in either portable steel cylinders or small bulk fixed storage tanks ready for use.
